Ayurveda or the “science of life” is a holistic system of preventive medicine and health care, which was developed over 5000 years ago and still practiced widely in India today, alongside Western medicine.
It is the result of a combination of herbal medicine, Hindu philosophy, daily experiences and scientific observations.

There are several aspects to this traditional medical system that include therapeutic herbs, diet and nutrition, life-style counselling, healing music, meditation and yoga – the sister science of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is all about balance – balancing our own, unique personal nature with the elements around us, and teaches us to spot our own imbalances before they manifest themselves as disease. Like its sister science, Yoga, it is both an art and a science and the two systems can support each other very well when we learn a little more about our own constitution, or Dosha. Ayurveda is one of the tools that can help us on our path to personal health and wellbeing in our modern, over-stretched lives.

Working with Moira, she will help you understand what perfect health is for you, and we will get you there through observing a wholesome diet suitable for your personal constitution and the season, ensuring our lifestyle and daily routine also support a balanced state of mind. Using appropriate therapies such as Abhyanga (massage with oil or powder), and pain treatments with herbal poultices and using oils to aid us. With just simple lifestyle adjustments such as adopting a regular yoga and meditation practice, you will be amazed at the vast improvement in health, wellbeing and energy levels you can achieve. So, what will we look at?

Prakriti / Vikruti

Every person is born with Ayurvedic DNA which is known as Prakriti. This constitution is a state of balance of the predominant dosha or doshas. When things go out of balance that’s known as Vikruti. We will first try to understand where you are.

Ama

is what is produced if Agni isn’t doing its thing! Food not being completely digested acts like poison. If unaddressed it accumulates and spreads to wherever there is a weakness in the body. It starts in the gastrointestinal tract and if not checked goes on to form at tissue level where disease happens.

Dhatu

Ayurveda classifies 7 levels of tissue in the body which need to function and be healthy for us to be healthy and well. In English they are plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow/nerve, and reproductive tissue.

Dosha

Our bodies are guided by 3 primary forces – Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. They operate through the five Panchamahabhuta – space, air, fire, water and earth. They are in us in different levels, determining the shape and make up of our bodies, personalities, digestive capacity and exercise preferences.

Agni

Our digestion and metabolism breaks down the food we eat to give us energy to grow and repair. If it isn’t working well, food doesn’t get processed and starts the disease process. It’s needed to support Ojas – the essence of life.

Mala

Food which isn’t used to sustain the body is treated by our bodies as by-products or waste, Mala. This is eliminated as three substances – faeces, urine and sweat. Faeces being the refuse of the food, urine is the liquid waste and sweda (sweat) is the secretion through the pores of the skin.
